As temperatures soar to uncomfortable levels across Tamil Nadu, political candidates are grappling with the blistering heat as they traverse the election battlegrounds. According to the latest forecasts from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and weather bloggers, the sun is expected to hover between 37°C and 38°C over the next two to three days, significantly exceeding normal levels in various parts of the state.

The scorching conditions have already taken a toll on campaign activities, with reports emerging of candidates and supporters struggling to cope with the relentless summer heat. Veteran Congress candidate and sitting MP, V Vaithilingam, experienced a health scare during a campaign event in the town limits, where he fainted but later recovered after receiving immediate attention.

In response to the adverse weather conditions, candidates are adjusting their campaign strategies to minimize the impact of the heat. Many have opted to start their campaigns early in the morning and resume them in the late afternoon to avoid the peak heat hours. Additionally, measures such as keeping campaign meetings concise and providing essential items like water, juices, Butter milk and caps to supporters are being implemented across party lines.

Despite these precautions, the intense heat has led to instances of campaign workers falling ill, with reports of colds and viral fevers surfacing. This has prompted campaign teams to make necessary adjustments to account for potential absenteeism due to health concerns.

Efforts by candidates like Sowmiya Anbumani and her daughters, as well as Jothimani congress, Nainar Nagendran from BJP, and R. Kumaraguru from AIADMK in Kallakurichi, to engage with voters despite challenging weather conditions are commendable, says David, a political observer.

Their dedication exemplifies the resilience needed in political campaigns, ensuring their message reaches all corners of the electorate, he adds.

Adopting grueling day-long campaign schedules demonstrates their commitment to representing constituents effectively, he winds up.

Alexander, a political strategist,  speaking to News Today, highlighted the unexpected intensity of the early summer heat, expressing concern for people’s reluctance to go out. He emphasized the potential impact of such extreme weather on voter turnout, suggesting that it may deter voters from going to the polls and standing in long queues, especially for first-time voters. He urged the government to take essential measures to ensure that people can carry out their necessary activities.
