Differences within the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) regarding its alliance with the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) have surfaced publicly. Erode East MLA and former TNCC president EVKS Elangovan criticized party MP Karti Chidambaram for his “provocative” remarks about the alliance.
Known for his outspoken nature and willingness to criticize party colleagues and leaders regardless of their rank, Elangovan did not hold back on Friday. He admonished Karti Chidambaram for his candid views on the party’s ties with the DMK.
“If he didn’t desire an alliance with the DMK, he should have contested alone in the recent Parliamentary polls,” Elangovan stated in several television interviews. “Almost all Congress functionaries in Sivagangai did not want him to be fielded there. They went to Delhi and petitioned against his candidature. He was allotted a ticket because of his father Chidambaram. No Congress functionary worked for his victory. He won only because of the work of the DMK. He would have struggled to secure his deposit if he had contested alone without the alliance.”
Elangovan’s remarks have highlighted the internal discord within the TNCC, particularly regarding the nature and future of its alliance with the DMK. This public disagreement raises questions about the stability and unity of the Congress party in Tamil Nadu as it navigates its political strategy and alliances.
The rift underscores a broader debate within the party on whether to maintain its alliance with the DMK or to contest future elections independently.
