Seoul, Sept 4: Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will travel to Seoul on September 6-7 for a summit with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, according to an announcement from Yoon’s office on Tuesday.A statement from Yoon’s office highlighted that the summit would reflect on the outcomes of their previous 11 rounds of discussions and chart the future direction for bilateral, regional, and global cooperation.
Since his tenure began in 2022, President Yoon has prioritized mending relations with Japan and bolstering security cooperation to address North Korea’s military threats. His efforts have led to a notable improvement in relations, including a historic trilateral summit with Japan and the United States at Camp David last year.
Prime Minister Kishida, who is set to resign amid political scandals and rising living costs, is expected to offer constructive advice to his successor on foreign policy and the future of Japan-South Korea relations.
President Yoon emphasized that despite upcoming changes in leadership in Tokyo and Washington, the commitment to cooperation with Japan and the United States will persist.
