With heavy rains forecasted for Chennai, the city is at risk of potential flooding. To ensure safety and minimize the impact, residents are advised to take several precautionary measures.
Precautionary Steps for Flood Safety:
Stay Updated on Weather Alerts: Keep a close watch on weather forecasts and government warnings through local news channels, official websites, and mobile alerts. Stay informed about flood-prone areas in the city.
Prepare Emergency Kits: Ensure you have an emergency kit with essential items such as bottled water, dry food, first-aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, and necessary medications. Keep important documents in waterproof bags.
Avoid Waterlogged Areas: Stay away from low-lying and flood-prone areas such as subways, bridges, and roads prone to water stagnation. Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain.
Turn Off Electrical Appliances: During flooding, there is a high risk of electrocution. Turn off power supplies and unplug electrical appliances to prevent short circuits and electrical accidents.
Move to Higher Ground: If your home is located in a low-lying area or near water bodies, be prepared to evacuate and move to higher ground or relief shelters announced by the authorities.
Clear Drains and Waterways: Ensure that drainage systems around your home are cleared to prevent water stagnation. Avoid dumping waste in open drains to help the water flow freely.
Park Vehicles in Safe Areas: Avoid parking vehicles in low-lying areas or streets prone to flooding. Park them in elevated spots or covered parking lots.
Keep Emergency Contacts Ready: Have a list of emergency contacts, including local disaster management authorities, rescue teams, and helplines, readily available.
Avoid Walking or Driving Through Floodwater: Floodwater may contain hidden dangers such as open manholes, sharp objects, or live wires. Avoid walking or driving through it, as even shallow water can be hazardous.
Follow Government Instructions: Adhere to evacuation orders or instructions issued by local authorities. Cooperate with disaster response teams and avoid spreading unverified information.
By staying informed and taking these precautionary measures, residents can help protect themselves and their families from the potential dangers of flooding during the heavy rains expected in Chennai.
