The Tamil Nadu segment of the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway (BCE) is on track to revolutionize travel between Chennai and Bengaluru, with a scheduled completion by August 2025. This ambitious greenfield project, a four-lane, access-controlled expressway, promises to cut down travel time and distance significantly, offering enhanced connectivity between the two bustling cities.
Spanning 105.7 kilometers across the Tamil Nadu districts of Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Vellore, and Ranipet, the expressway is set to become a major artery for both commuters and trade. With around 65% of the construction work completed, the project is making significant strides toward its target completion date.
Among the various segments of the expressway, the 24.5-kilometer stretch from Walajapet to Arakkonam has made the most headway, with over 84% of the work already completed. On the other hand, the Arakkonam to Kancheepuram section is still in progress, with about 52% of the work finished. The 24-kilometer Gudipala-Walajapet stretch has seen 70% completion, while the 31.07-kilometer Kancheepuram-Sriperumbudur stretch is nearing 64% completion.
Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have highlighted that the project has largely avoided the challenges of land acquisition. The route primarily passes through open land, which has eased the process. However, some delays have been encountered due to the relocation of electricity towers along the planned expressway route.
The expressway, which carries a price tag of ₹17,000 crore, will feature six toll plazas, 34 major bridges, and 31 minor bridges. The total length of bridges is expected to span 15 kilometers, with the longest bridge reaching an impressive 840 meters.
Once completed, the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway will not only streamline travel but will also provide a significant boost to the economic ties between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. From reducing travel time to enhancing the movement of goods, the project is poised to benefit commuters, tourists, and businesses alike.
The expressway, starting at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu and extending to Gudipala in Andhra Pradesh, promises to bring both cities closer, fostering greater connectivity and facilitating smoother trade and transport. With the project progressing well and nearing its completion, the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway is set to become a landmark infrastructure project that will transform the way people travel and do business between the two major cities.
