The acclaimed 2022 film Kantara is expanding its universe with a much-anticipated prequel, Kantara – A Legend Chapter 1, set for release on October 2, 2025, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti. The announcement has already sparked significant excitement among fans and cinephiles, promising an exploration of the mythological roots that powered the original film’s gripping narrative.

Kantara gained national and international acclaim with its unique fusion of mythology, action, and cultural storytelling, earning it the National Award for Best Popular Film for wholesome entertainment. The movie not only captivated audiences but also brought its creator, Rishab Shetty, into the limelight, winning him his first Best Actor accolade at the National Film Awards.

Kantara – A Legend Chapter 1 aims to delve into the backstory of the iconic deities and folklore that formed the foundation of the original. The prequel seeks to deepen the narrative and provide context to the rich lore that enchanted audiences in 2022. The announcement has sparked curiosity about how this new chapter will expand on the original’s themes and whether it will replicate the cultural impact that turned Kantara into a phenomenon.

Produced by Vijay Kiragandur under the Hombale Films banner, known for massive hits like KGF, the prequel promises to outdo its predecessor in scale and ambition. While the original Kantara was made on a modest budget of Rs 16 crore and earned over Rs 400 crore worldwide, Kantara – A Legend Chapter 1 is reportedly set to be produced on a grander scale, with a budget possibly reaching Rs 200 crore. This financial leap underscores Hombale Films’ commitment to creating a visually stunning and compelling cinematic experience.

In a testament to its anticipated popularity, the film has already secured a lucrative post-theatrical digital rights deal with Prime Video for Rs 125 crore. This agreement marks one of the biggest acquisitions for a regional film and highlights the growing global interest in Indian cinema’s regional stories.

Rishab Shetty, who wrote, directed, and starred in Kantara, will once again take the lead in shaping the prequel. The film will also see the return of some familiar faces from the original, although the full cast list remains under wraps. Shetty will be supported by the talented composer Ajaneesh Loknath and cinematographer Aravind Kashyap, whose work contributed significantly to the original’s success.

The production is already underway with an intense 60-day marathon shooting schedule. The creators aim to set new benchmarks in Indian cinema, leveraging elevated production values and an expanded storyline to attract an even wider audience. With its ambitious scale, Kantara – A Legend Chapter 1 is poised to become one of the most discussed films of 2025, following the legacy of its predecessor that captured hearts and minds around the globe.

Fans eagerly await October 2, 2025, to see if the prequel will recapture the magic of Kantara and push the boundaries of Indian storytelling further than ever before.
