The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm today, as per the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai. The system, moving towards Tamil Nadu, is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to Chennai and other coastal districts over the next four days.

Meteorological Update
The RMC’s report highlights that as of yesterday morning, the depression strengthened into a deep depression. It was centered approximately 590 km south-southeast of Nagapattinam, 710 km south-southeast of Puducherry, and 800 km south-southeast of Chennai. Moving at a speed of 12 kmph in a north-northwest direction, the system is likely to intensify into a cyclone today.

Once formed, the cyclone is expected to move along the Tamil Nadu coast without making landfall.

Rainfall Forecast
The cyclone’s influence is predicted to cause widespread rainfall in Tamil Nadu. Coastal districts, including Chennai, are expected to witness heavy downpours starting today.

Today’s Alerts
Red Alert: Very heavy rainfall (above 20 cm) is expected in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal in Puducherry.
Orange Alert: Heavy to very heavy rainfall (12–20 cm) is forecast for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Ariyalur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, and Puducherry.
Moderate Rainfall: Up to 11 cm of rain is likely in Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Trichy, Sivagangai, and Ramanathapuram districts.
Tomorrow’s Alerts
Orange Alert: Very heavy rainfall is predicted for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and Villupuram districts.
Precautionary Measures
The Meteorological Department has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea. Authorities have been instructed to monitor vulnerable areas, and people in low-lying regions are being urged to take necessary precautions to stay safe.

Tamil Nadu remains on high alert as preparations are underway to handle the impact of the impending cyclone.
