The recent tragic incident at a private school in Vikravandi, where 4-year-old Lia Lakshmi lost her life after falling into an open septic tank, has once again highlighted the urgent need for stringent safety measures in educational institutions.
Lia, an LKG student, was reportedly playing near the septic tank when the accident occurred. The negligence in ensuring a secure environment for students has sparked outrage among parents and the public, demanding immediate action to prevent such tragedies.
The Importance of Safety in Schools
Schools are meant to be sanctuaries of learning and growth, but the absence of basic safety protocols can turn them into dangerous environments. Infrastructure issues such as open septic tanks, unsecured construction zones, and lack of proper supervision pose significant risks to children, especially young ones, says Kumaran, a social activist.
Key areas of concern according to him are
Unsafe Infrastructure: Damaged or uncovered septic tanks, broken stair railings, and poorly maintained playgrounds are accidents waiting to happen.
Lack of Supervision: Adequate staff should be assigned to monitor children, especially in areas where hazards may exist.
Absence of Safety Audits: Regular inspections of school premises are crucial to identify and rectify potential dangers.
Emergency Response Training: Teachers and staff should be trained to handle emergencies effectively to minimize harm.
Steps to Enhance Safety in Schools:
Mandatory Safety Audits: Governments must enforce regular safety inspections in schools to ensure infrastructure compliance.
Strict Accountability: School managements should be held accountable for any negligence that compromises student safety.
Safety Awareness Programs: Conduct workshops for teachers, students, and parents on identifying and preventing risks.
Child-Friendly Design: Schools should be designed keeping the safety and movement of children in mind, including secure fencing, covered tanks, and safe play areas.
CCTV Surveillance: Installing cameras in key areas can help monitor activities and deter negligence.
Lakshmi, a working mother, says, ‘The onus lies not just on schools but also on regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with safety norms. Parents should also be proactive in voicing concerns about potential hazards.
The tragic loss of Lia Lakshmi serves as a grim reminder that children’s safety in schools cannot be overlooked. Immediate measures must be taken to ensure that such preventable incidents never occur again. Education and safety must go hand in hand to build a secure future for our children, she added.
