The Tamil Nadu Assembly’s first session of the year witnessed high drama on Monday as AIADMK MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami, were evicted en masse after raising the Anna University sexual assault case.
Sporting badges that read “Yaar Antha Sir? (Who is that Sir?),” the AIADMK members demanded accountability from the DMK government regarding the recent incident. The slogan referred to the alleged involvement of an unidentified individual in the case, which has caused public outrage.
The AIADMK MLAs raised slogans and sought an answer from the ruling party, disrupting proceedings. Despite repeated warnings, their protests escalated, forcing Speaker M. Appavu to order their eviction from the House.
The Anna University sexual assault case has become a major flashpoint in Tamil Nadu politics, with the opposition demanding stringent action and transparency from the DMK government. The ruling party has yet to address the specifics of the AIADMK’s query, intensifying the political tensions in the state.
This incident adds to the controversies during the Assembly session, including the walkout by Governor R.N. Ravi earlier in the day. The tumultuous start to the year underscores the challenges ahead for the Tamil Nadu government in addressing key issues and maintaining decorum in the legislature.
