The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), which contested in alliance with the AIADMK in the recent Lok Sabha elections, was reportedly promised three parliamentary seats along with a Rajya Sabha seat. DMDK’s General Secretary, Premalatha Vijayakanth, had publicly stated that an agreement had been made regarding the Rajya Sabha seat allocation. However, recent political developments within the AIADMK have altered the situation. With the party facing internal and external challenges, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) has decided to nominate a loyal party member for the Rajya Sabha seat. This move ensures that the AIADMK has a representative in Delhi to handle political affairs, thereby denying the DMDK the promised seat.
Confirming this stance, EPS declared yesterday that no agreement had been made with DMDK regarding a Rajya Sabha seat. This statement has reportedly come as a shock to the DMDK leadership.
When Premalatha arrived at the DMDK headquarters, she was asked about the situation but remained silent and left without commenting. Later, she posted a statement on social media regarding the issue but quickly deleted it. She has also instructed DMDK functionaries not to comment on the matter publicly.
The unexpected decision has sparked speculation about the future of DMDK’s alliance with AIADMK, raising questions about whether the party will continue in the coalition or reconsider its political strategy.
