The Union government’s plans to implement delimitation in 2026 will promote ‘Hindia’ as the real motive is to consolidate power in Hindi-speaking States, said Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM)
president Kamal Haasan during the all-party meeting chaired by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at the Secretariat in Chennai on Wednesday.
Speaking at the all-party meeting on delimitation, he stated that delimitation based on population is not just a concern for Tamil Nadu; it also affects other States like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka,
Kerala, Punjab, Odisha, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the north-eastern States.
Kamal Haasan further questioned why the government that did not conduct national census so far citing COVID-19, now plans to implement delimitation in 2026. The real motive is to consolidate
power in Hindi-speaking States and to ensure a decisive electoral victory, he suggested.
The actor-turned-politician also said, “We envision an inclusive India, but they [Union government] want to create ‘Hindia’.” Irrespective of how the constituencies are redrawn, the non-Hindi-speaking States will be the most affected, added he.
The MNM leader went on to reiterate his stance that the States which effectively implemented population control measures should not be punished. If the number of elected representatives is to be inncreased based on population, it should be done in State legislatures and not in the Parliament, he argued.
