A 29-year-old man, Ajithkumar, died during police investigation near Sivagangai. He was a temporary temple worker taken in for questioning in a jewellery theft case in Thiruppuvanam.
Following his death, DGP Shankar Jiwal has ordered the case to be handed over to the CB-CID for investigation. Six policemen involved in the incident have been suspended by Sivagangai SP Ashish Rawat.
Meanwhile, a petition was filed in the Madurai High Court seeking a CBI probe and ā¹50 lakh compensation for the victimās family. The court had already raised serious questions about the custodial death.
Justice Venkatesh also personally inspected the police stations involved. The case has triggered public concern and legal scrutiny across the state.
