Popular independent rapper Vedan is set to make his Tamil film debut as a composer in director Vijay Milton’s upcoming film, the makers confirmed on Sunday. Vedan, known for his raw and socially-charged lyrics, rose to renewed fame recently with the track ‘Kuthanthiram’ from the 2024 Malayalam hit Manjummel Boys.Vijay Milton’s new project is said to be thematically linked to his critically acclaimed 2014 film Goli Soda. That film, centered on street-smart teenagers finding their identity, was followed by Goli Soda 2 and a web series Goli Soda: Rising which streamed on Disney+ Hotstar. The new film is expected to explore similar themes of youth, struggle, and identity.
Vedan, who first made waves in 2020 with his independent single ‘Voice of the Voiceless’, has been noted for his bold takes on caste discrimination, marginalization, and social injustice. He has since contributed to several independent and film projects, including Nayattu, Padavettu, Kondal, Narivetta, and All We Imagine As Light.
His inclusion in a mainstream Tamil film is seen as a significant crossover for the indie rap scene. Alongside Vedan, rapper Paal Dabba is also part of the film’s cast, further reinforcing the film’s urban and edgy tone.
However, Vedan’s career has not been without controversy. In 2020, he was accused of sexual harassment by multiple women during the MeToo movement. He responded with a public apology. He was also arrested for cannabis possession and later released on bail. The controversies drew attention, but did not stop his growth in the indie music scene.
The film features a strong ensemble cast including Bharath, Sunil, Aari Arjunan, Ammu Abhirami, Kishore DS, Vijetha, Prasanna Balachandran, and Imman Annachi. Directed and produced by Vijay Milton, the film is expected to blend street realism with strong performances and a bold soundtrack.
