In a major move to ease traffic congestion in South Chennai, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has proposed the construction of a steel composite girder flyover along Velachery Main Road. The flyover will connect the Five Furlong Road junction with the Guru Nanak College junction, aiming to provide relief to thousands of daily commuters.Spanning a total length of 3 kilometers and 11 meters in width, the three-lane flyover will begin 300 meters after the Sardar Patel Road–Velachery Main Road intersection and extend up to the Velachery Bypass. This arterial project is designed to bypass key traffic bottlenecks at the Race Course Road, Five Furlong Road, and Velachery Bypass junctions.
The plan includes two uni-directional down ramps — a 5.5-meter-wide ramp on Five Furlong Road for vehicles heading towards Guindy and a 4-meter-wide ramp near Guru Nanak College for traffic coming from Guindy. Additionally, 5.5-meter-wide service roads and 1.5-meter-wide footpaths will be constructed on both sides to support local traffic flow and ensure pedestrian safety.
Traffic surveys indicate that the Five Furlong Road junction sees over 7,400 passenger car units (PCU) during peak hours, while the Guru Nanak College junction sees nearly 7,750 PCUs, highlighting the urgent need for infrastructure expansion.
A senior civic official said, “The entire flyover will be a steel composite girder structure. While the beams and girders will be made of steel, the piers and columns will be constructed using either steel or concrete, based on structural demands.” The GCC has already floated tenders to begin construction.
This flyover is one of two major bridge projects announced by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu in the Tamil Nadu Budget 2025–26 aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the city.
Once completed, the project is expected to significantly reduce travel time for motorists commuting between Velachery, Guindy, and surrounding areas — especially during rush hours between 8:30–10:30 am and 5:30–7:30 pm.
