Residents of Chennai will soon be able to get rid of unwanted household items without leaving their homes, as the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) launches a door-to-door collection program starting Saturday, October 11.Under this initiative, sanitary workers will visit homes across the city to collect unused items such as old furniture, electrical appliances, beds, mattresses, and other bulky waste. This move aims to reduce the accumulation of garbage in public spaces, which poses health hazards and can block water bodies.
Currently, the GCC collects over 6,000 tonnes of waste daily from 200 wards across 15 zones. After segregation into biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, materials are sent to composting centers, gas plants, and bio-mining facilities at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur. However, bulky unused items often remain on streets, creating inconvenience and hygiene issues.
Residents can report unwanted items for collection by calling the toll-free number 1913 or using the mobile voicemail facility 94450 61913.
Recently, sanitary workers removed 700 tonnes of roadside garbage, including unused beds and mattresses, highlighting the need for such a home-based collection program. The new initiative is expected to make Chennai cleaner and safer while promoting responsible disposal of household items.
