Kathmandu, Dec 4: Nepal’s Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a show-cause notice to the interim government following a petition by deposed Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli’s CPN-UML, challenging its formation and the dissolution of the House of Representatives.
Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was appointed interim prime minister on September 12, and President Ramchandra Paudel dissolved Parliament on her recommendation. The next general election is scheduled for March 5, 2026.
The CPN-UML argues Karki’s appointment is unconstitutional under Articles 76 and 132(2), as a non-Parliament member and former chief justice cannot assume the prime ministerial post. The party seeks nullification of her appointment, cabinet appointments, and the House dissolution, calling the government “illegal.”
The Supreme Court has directed all respondents to submit written explanations within seven days and will hear the petition alongside previous cases challenging the House dissolution and interim government formation.
