The Greater Chennai Corporation has announced that 100.29 acres of land have been successfully reclaimed from the long-polluted dump yards at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur through large-scale bio-mining operations.
For several decades, Chennai’s waste had been dumped at these two sites, causing serious environmental damage. To fix this, the Corporation launched a major bio-mining project to segregate, process, and safely remove legacy waste that had accumulated over the years.
At Kodungaiyur, the project—carried out at a cost of ₹641 crore—has cleared 22.06 lakh metric tonnes of old waste, helping recover 6 acres of land. Work such as fencing the reclaimed area and planting saplings is currently in progress.
In total, 48.41 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste have been removed from both Perungudi and Kodungaiyur. This has made it possible to reclaim over 100 acres of land, which the Corporation says will be used for future development and environmental improvement.
The initiative marks a major step in Chennai’s push towards cleaner waste management and restoring degraded urban spaces.
