Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is preparing to launch operations on the 9‑kilometre metro stretch between Porur Junction and Poonamallee Bypass, part of the larger Phase‑2 Corridor 4 project, later this month. This new section is expected to greatly improve connectivity in West Chennai and reduce travel times for daily commuters.
The upcoming corridor will feature 10 elevated metro stations along the route from Poonamallee Bypass to Porur, and CMRL has been conducting extensive track laying and trial runs to ensure safety and readiness ahead of the launch.
In addition to transport benefits, CMRL plans to integrate commercial facilities into several stations, offering shoppers new options for shopping, dining and parking. These developments aim to enhance the commuter experience and increase non‑fare revenue.
Officials have also announced plans for frequent services along the corridor, with trains expected to run at approximately six‑minute intervals during peak hours once operations begin.
The Porur–Poonamallee Bypass segment will be the first Phase‑2 stretch to open for public use, marking a key milestone in Chennai’s expanding metro network that is scheduled to be rolled out in phases between 2025 and 2028.
The launch is eagerly anticipated by residents and daily commuters, as it promises smoother travel across key suburban hubs and stronger integration with the existing metro system.
