With temperatures dipping slightly during the winter months, the use of water heaters and geysers has increased across Chennai households. Experts and officials have urged residents to follow basic safety measures to prevent accidents, electrical faults and unnecessary power consumption.Electrical safety experts point out that many incidents occur due to poor wiring and lack of regular maintenance. “Most homes in Chennai use instant water heaters. If the earthing is not proper or the wiring is old, it can pose a serious risk,” said an electrical inspector, advising residents to get appliances checked by certified technicians before continuous use.
Fire and rescue officials have also cautioned against leaving heaters switched on for long durations. “Water heaters should be turned off immediately after use. Overheating and short circuits are common causes of domestic fires during winter,” a senior fire officer said, adding that residents should avoid using damaged plugs and extension cords.
Energy conservation is another concern. Officials from the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) said mindful usage can help reduce electricity bills. “Setting the thermostat at a moderate temperature and using heaters only when required can significantly cut power consumption,” a TANGEDCO official noted.
Residents have also been advised to keep water heaters out of reach of children, avoid switching them on without water inside the tank, and ensure proper ventilation in bathrooms. Authorities said following simple precautions can help Chennaiites enjoy warm water safely during the winter season without compromising safety or energy efficiency.
