A new multisensory park designed especially for children with disabilities was inaugurated in Chennai on Tuesday by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, marking a significant step for inclusive recreational spaces in the city.
Located at Boppili Raja Government Higher Secondary School, the park was developed at a cost of Rs 13 lakh and features a variety of play and activity equipment including slides, seeâsaws, wind chimes, merryâgoârounds, throwing balls and skipping ropes. These installations are tailored to stimulate different senses such as sight, hearing, touch and balance, helping children with special needs build sensory and motor skills.
âMore than 400 students with special needs from Classes I to XII in the Puzhal block will benefit from this park,â the minister said, highlighting the governmentâs focus on promoting inclusivity and accessibility through such initiatives. He also announced plans to open 20 more similar parks across Tamil Nadu, aiming to support over 10,000 children with disabilities in the coming months.
In addition to play equipment, the park includes facilities such as basketball, throwball and volleyball nets, as well as occupational boards to enhance handâeye coordination and muscle strength. The project received a total funding allocation of Rs 2.6 crore during the 2024â25 assembly session to support the establishment of more inclusive parks in the state.
Officials said the park is a key effort to create safe, engaging and supportive environments where children with diverse abilities can play, learn and grow alongside their peers.
