
The Government of India has selected five distinguished personalities from Tamil Nadu to be conferred the Padma Shri, one of the country’s highest civilian honours, in recognition of their remarkable contributions across various fields, sources from the Union government said on Sunday.
The Padma Shri awards are traditionally announced on the eve of Republic Day and honour individuals who have made noteworthy contributions in art, culture, public service, literature, education and other domains.
The five recipients from Tamil Nadu chosen for the Padma Shri 2026 are:
Dr. Punniyamurthy Natesan,
Othuvar Thiruthani Swaminathan – A respected cultural or artistic personality whose work has enriched Tamil heritage.
R. Krishnan – Honoured for significant contributions in community or public service.
Rajastapathi Kaliappa Goundar – A veteran bronze sculptor known for his mastery over traditional artistry and contribution to sculptural arts and Thiruvarur Bakhtavathsalam.
Additionally, K. Pajanivel from neighbouring Puducherry was also among those selected for the prestigious Padma Shri this year.
