Edappadi K. Palaniswami, leader of the opposition in Tamil Nadu, on Thursday launched a blistering attack on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government over what he described as a surge in mosquito-borne diseases across the State.
Addressing a public meeting, Palaniswami claimed that mosquito populations were thriving under the present administration due to alleged government inaction on vector control measures. He said residents were facing growing health risks from dengue and other illnesses, and accused the government of failing to take timely measures to curb breeding grounds.
Palaniswami accused the DMK regime of neglecting basic sanitation and civic responsibilities, asserting that the result was increased illness and public discomfort. He challenged the government to explain its strategy for mosquito control and urged it to improve waste management and drainage systems in urban and rural areas.
The opposition leader also tied the issue to broader concerns about governance, saying it reflected poorly on the government’s administrative efficiency. He said that while people expect safe and healthy living conditions, the authorities have instead allowed mosquitoes to proliferate, causing distress to families across the State.
Palaniswami’s comments came as a part of intensified criticism from opposition parties in the run-up to the 2026 Assembly elections, with health and public infrastructure being key talking points. He urged the electorate to hold the government accountable at the ballot box if civic services continued to deteriorate.
Local political observers noted that health concerns such as mosquito-borne diseases have become a sensitive public issue, with citizens increasingly voicing complaints on social media and through community forums. Palaniswami said his party would press for stronger preventive action and demanded an official response from the State government.
