The Election Commission of India has warned candidates contesting in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections that spending beyond the prescribed limit will be treated as a corrupt practice.
Officials said each candidate can spend a maximum of ₹40 lakh for election campaigning. If the expenditure exceeds this limit, it will be considered corruption under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The warning was issued during a meeting held in Coimbatore for election officials, where guidelines were explained on how to monitor campaign spending and enforce rules during the election period.
Authorities said candidates must maintain proper records of their expenses. If false accounts are submitted or irregularities are found, the candidate could face disqualification from contesting elections for up to three years.
The Election Commission also said campaign activities such as public meetings, rallies, posters, vehicles used for campaigning and food provided to supporters will be counted as legitimate election expenses.
However, distributing cash, liquor or gifts to voters will be treated as illegal expenditure and action will be taken under the law.
Officials added that special teams, including flying squads and video surveillance teams, will monitor campaign activities in every constituency to ensure strict compliance with the rules.
