Train services on the long-awaited extension of the Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System between Velachery and St Thomas Mount are set to begin from tomorrow, bringing improved rail connectivity for commuters in south Chennai.
The newly completed stretch is about 4.5 to 5 km long and will extend MRTS services beyond Velachery up to St. Thomas Mount railway station. The project includes new stations at Puzhuthivakkam MRTS station and Adambakkam MRTS station before reaching St Thomas Mount.
With the commissioning of the extension, existing MRTS train services that currently terminate at Velachery will be extended up to St Thomas Mount. Additional services are also expected to be introduced to reduce congestion and improve passenger convenience.
The new connection is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters by enabling seamless interchange with the suburban railway network and metro services at St Thomas Mount, turning it into an important multi-modal transport hub in Chennai.
The project, part of the MRTS Phase-II expansion, had faced delays for nearly two decades due to land acquisition issues and coordination challenges before finally being completed.
Railway officials said the extension will significantly improve connectivity for residents of areas such as Adambakkam, Velachery and surrounding neighbourhoods.
