Chennai, May 5:

Tamil nationalist party Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), which positioned itself as an alternative to the Dravidian majors, suffered multiple setbacks in the 2026 Assembly elections, with its vote share witnessing a sharp decline.
According to early figures at the time of going to print, the party’s vote share dropped to around 4%, a significant fall from its previous high of over 8%, signalling a dip in public support.

Adding to its woes, the emergence of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam led by Vijay appears to have overshadowed NTK’s space as an alternative political force. The electorate, observers note, has increasingly rallied behind the new entrant, reshaping the State’s political narrative.

Despite contesting all 234 constituencies and maintaining its long-standing strategy of going solo in both Assembly and Parliamentary elections, Naam Tamilar Katchi failed to make electoral gains. The party had fielded a diverse set of candidates, including ensuring notable gender representation and even nominating a transgender candidate, but could not convert this into electoral success.

In a significant personal setback, party chief coordinator Seeman lost in the Karaikudi constituency, a region close to his hometown, underlining the scale of the party’s disappointing performance in this election.
