Chennai, May 14:
The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday appointed senior IPS officer Asra Garg as Inspector General of Police (Intelligence), replacing Avinash Kumar, who had been posted by the Election Commission of India ahead of the Assembly elections.
Garg was previously serving as IGP, North Zone, and has earlier held key positions in the State police, including Additional Commissioner of Police in the Greater Chennai Police.
During the previous regime, he was also appointed to head a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the Karur stampede incident in which 41 people were killed at a political rally addressed by TVK president C Joseph Vijay. However, the SIT functioned only briefly before the Supreme Court transferred the investigation to the CBI.
The reshuffle is seen as a significant administrative change in the State’s intelligence leadership following the elections.
