Chennai, May 25:
The ambitious 3.2-km-long elevated flyover being constructed along Anna Salai from Saidapet to Teynampet is progressing steadily and is expected to be opened for public use by September 2026, according to officials. Envisioned as a major solution to chronic traffic congestion in central Chennai, the steel flyover has now entered its final phase, with nearly 68% of the overall construction work completed. Authorities said that the foundation work is almost fully done, marking a critical milestone in the project, while 32 out of the planned 131 deck slabs have already been installed, with additional segments scheduled for completion by the end of May as work gathers pace.
The project, which runs along one of Chennai’s busiest arterial stretches, involves complex engineering due to its alignment above existing metro infrastructure and dense urban traffic zones. Officials noted that multiple teams are working simultaneously to accelerate construction, particularly in high-traffic junctions, while also managing challenges such as utility shifting and limited working space. Once completed, the four-lane elevated corridor is expected to provide signal-free travel, reduce travel time significantly, and decongest key junctions including Saidapet, Nandanam, and Teynampet.
The flyover is also seen as a major urban infrastructure milestone, especially in the context of the Tamil Nadu Election 2026, reflecting the government’s focus on improving mobility and easing commuter stress across the city.
