New Delhi, July 9:
The Ministry of Railways will soon notify more than 100 special train services to manage the surge in passenger traffic during the Onam festival, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Monday.
Addressing a press conference, the Minister, who also holds the Information and Broadcasting portfolio, said the initiative is aimed at facilitating smooth travel for people heading to their hometowns to celebrate Kerala’s biggest festival.
In 2026, the 10-day Onam celebrations will commence on August 16 and conclude on August 26. The special trains are expected to operate throughout this period to cater to the increased demand for travel.
Railway officials stated that the move underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to ensuring safe, convenient and comfortable journeys during peak festive seasons. The initiative is also aligned with the Prime Minister’s broader vision of strengthening railway infrastructure and connectivity in Kerala.
The announcement is expected to bring relief to thousands of passengers who face difficulties in securing confirmed tickets during the festive rush every year.
