Chennai, July 27:
Tamil Nadu Energy, Resources and Law Minister R. Nirmalkumar on Sunday accused the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of attempting to hijack and politicise the ongoing student protests against NEET.
Addressing reporters, the minister alleged that “Gen Z T-shirt wearing manipulators” linked to the DMK were driven out by students themselves from protest sites. He termed the party’s involvement a “cheap political act” aimed at exploiting a student-led movement.
Nirmalkumar reiterated that the State government’s position on NEET had been consistent, stating that it opposed the exam but could not bypass it merely through State legislation. “Central laws cannot be overridden that way. Our stance has been clear from the beginning—we do not want NEET,” he said.
Dismissing the opposition’s demands and political rhetoric, the minister described calls for resignations and legislative measures as “eye-wash” that would not benefit students. He added that the focus should remain on constructive solutions rather than politicising the issue.
The remarks come amid continuing protests across the State against NEET, with political parties trading charges over attempts to influence the agitation.
