Chennai, Aug 12:

Tamil Nadu has begun intensifying precautionary and flood-prevention measures ahead of the Northeast Monsoon, with Rural Development and Water Resources Minister N. Anand chairing a review meeting in Chennai on Tuesday.

The meeting, held on the directions of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, reviewed measures to minimise the impact of heavy rains and ensure uninterrupted essential services.

Officials were directed to identify waterlogging-prone areas in advance, desilt and repair stormwater drains, clear blockages in waterways and ensure the speedy removal of rainwater from low-lying areas.

Preparatory measures to prevent disruption to drinking water supply during the monsoon were also discussed.

The meeting further reviewed disaster-response arrangements, including keeping rescue teams and essential equipment ready, strengthening safety measures concerning electric poles and electrical installations, and immediately repairing potholes on roads.

Senior government officials, including Chennai Corporation Central Region Deputy Commissioner H.R. Kaushik, attended the meeting.
