Members of the public, film personalities and political leaders are paying their last respects to veteran actor Sowcar Janaki, whose mortal remains was kept at her residence in Teynampet.
Janaki, who passed away on Friday at the age of 94, had a career spanning more than seven decades and acted in over 400 films across several South Indian languages.
Her mortal remains were brought to her residence, where relatives, friends, colleagues and admirers have been arriving to pay their respects.
Several political leaders and film personalities have expressed condolences over her death. Among those who paid tribute were Chief Minister Vijay, DMK president M K Stalin, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss and Tamil Nadu Congress president B Manickam Tagore.
Actors Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Sarathkumar and Nasser, filmmaker T Rajendar and poet Vairamuthu also condoled her death.
Janaki’s final rites will be held at the Besant Nagar crematorium on Saturday evening.
Known for memorable performances in films including Puthiya Paravai, Kaviya Thalaivi, Iru Kodugal, Bama Vijayam and Thillu Mullu, she remained active in cinema and theatre across generations.
Her performance in Puthiya Paravai, particularly in the song “Paartha Nyabagam Illaiyo”, remains among her most enduring screen memories.
