Chennai, Aug 25:
The Tamil Nadu government has announced the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission (CMIUDM) to strengthen civic infrastructure and improve the quality of life in urban areas.
The scheme will cover corporations, municipalities and town panchayats, with project reports to be prepared for improving drinking water supply, underground sewerage, solid waste management, roads and transport facilities. Environmental protection and public health measures will also form part of the mission.
An estimated Rs 25 crore has been allocated for the implementation of the scheme.
Announcing the initiative on behalf of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay during the demands for grants for the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, Minister Rajmohan also said Rs 254 crore had been earmarked for ongoing and new underground sewerage projects, including works in Tambaram, Chromepet and Thiruneermalai.
The government will also take up biomining to clear legacy waste accumulated in Avadi, Tambaram and Coimbatore corporations.
Meanwhile, biogas generated at the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s 22 sewage treatment plants will be upgraded into compressed biogas and commercialised, creating an additional source of revenue for the government.
