Chennai, Sept 1:

Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) generated a record Rs 50,845 crore for the State government during 2025-26, crossing the Rs 50,000-crore mark for the first time and accounting for nearly 26 per cent of the State’s own tax revenue.

The figures were contained in the 2026-27 policy note of the Home, Prohibition and Excise Department.

Tasmac’s revenue increased by around five per cent from Rs 48,381 crore recorded in 2024-25. Of the latest revenue, Rs 39,010 crore came through Value Added Tax (VAT), while excise duty contributed Rs 11,836 crore.

The milestone highlights the significant contribution of liquor sales to the State’s finances, even as Tasmac continues to face criticism over alleged irregularities and overcharging at retail outlets.

The corporation has also maintained a strong revenue trajectory in the current financial year. During the first four months of 2026-27, Tasmac generated Rs 17,855 crore.

The department expects revenue to increase by about 5.3 per cent during the current financial year.

The figures came to light amid a heated Assembly debate over allegations that customers were being charged an additional Rs 10 per liquor bottle at Tasmac outlets.

The ruling TVK government has alleged that such overcharging had continued for years and that steps were being taken to eliminate the practice. The Opposition DMK has demanded evidence and questioned the government’s claims.

The record revenue has once again highlighted the State’s dependence on liquor-related taxes as a major source of own-tax revenue, while also bringing renewed focus on the functioning and regulation of Tasmac outlets across Tamil Nadu.
