NEW DELHI, Sept 3:

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has alleged that the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is aimed at manipulating voter lists and urged the Supreme Court to stop bulk deletions.

Sibal alleged that the ongoing exercise in several States was intended to help the BJP win elections. His remarks came in response to a media report alleging that BJP agents in Jharkhand’s Godda district were seeking deletion of voters, particularly from minority communities.

In a post on X, Sibal accused the BJP of targeting Muslims and called for Supreme Court intervention against what he described as a “politics of exclusion”.

His comments came amid a wider Opposition campaign against the Election Commission over the SIR exercise. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi have also accused the poll panel of facilitating what they call “vote chori”.

The controversy intensified after more than 2.06 crore electors were excluded from Maharashtra’s draft electoral roll following the SIR exercise.
