The Tamil Nadu government’s allocation of Rs 8.45 crore to organise book fairs in all 38 districts during 2026-27 is a welcome step towards taking books and the joy of reading beyond major cities. Since the initiative began in 2022-23, district-level fairs have offered a platform for readers, students, publishers and writers to come together. Making these events an annual feature across the State reflects a recognition that access to books and literary experiences should not be restricted by geography or economic circumstances.
However, the success of this initiative must be measured by more than the number of fairs held or the funds spent. Book fairs should attract first-generation readers, school and college students, rural communities and families who may not otherwise visit bookstores. Affordable books, discounts for students, reading sessions, author interactions, children’s literature and discussions on science, history and contemporary issues can make these events more meaningful. Libraries and educational institutions should also be encouraged to purchase books from local fairs, while publishers must be given adequate opportunities to showcase works in Tamil and other languages. Careful planning and transparent monitoring are essential to ensure that public money delivers lasting benefits.
Ultimately, a book fair should not remain an annual event that ends when the stalls are dismantled. It must serve as the starting point for a sustained reading movement. The government could strengthen district libraries, organise reading clubs, conduct literary programmes throughout the year and assess whether the fairs are bringing more people into the habit of reading. At a time when children and adults are increasingly drawn to short-form digital content, nurturing patience, curiosity and critical thinking through books is particularly important. The Rs 8.45-crore allocation is a positive beginning; its real value will depend on whether it helps create a generation of readers rather than merely a calendar of literary events.
