The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought the Centre’s response to a petition filed by the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) challenging the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and the rules framed under it.
Representing 21 news organisations, the DNPA argued that the absence of a specific exemption for journalism could restrict investigative reporting, expose confidential sources and force newsrooms to seek consent from people featured in their reports. It warned that the provisions could threaten press freedom and the public’s right to information. The court issued notice to the Centre and scheduled the next hearing for November 17.
