The notification, issued by Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, said the exercise would be held in all States and Union Territories except Manipur, pending a further announcement, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
A revisional round will be conducted from March 1 to 5, 2027, the notification said. The reference time for the census will be 00:00 hours on March 1.
The government has also provided an option for self-enumeration from January 10 to 24, 2027, ahead of the house-to-house population enumeration. The exercise will be conducted in phases to account for the regions excluded from the January-February schedule.
