The TVK-led Tamil Nadu government has officially urged the Centre to take necessary steps to establish a permanent regional Bench of the Supreme Court in Chennai.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the constitutional provisions supporting the setting up of an apex court bench outside the national capital.
In his communication, Vijay cited Article 130 of the Constitution, which provides that the Supreme Court shall sit in Delhi or at such other place or places as the Chief Justice of India may appoint from time to time with the approval of the President.
Pointing out the immense hardships faced by litigants across southern states who are invariably compelled to travel to New Delhi for justice, the Chief Minister noted that Chennai serves as an ideal location that would benefit the entire southern region.
Underlining the legacy of the Madras High Courtāone of the country’s oldest chartered High Courts established in 1862āand the competence of its bar, Vijay referenced recommendations from Parliamentary Standing Committees in 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2021 as well as various Law Commission reports, urging the Prime Minister to take up the matter afresh with the Supreme Court to secure a favourable outcome.
