In a strange turn of events, a woman and her accomplice were arrested for robbing another of Rs four lakh at knife point recently.
According to sources, K Saranya (29), a resident of Damodarapuram, Adyar, and her accomplice M Arunagiri (45), an auto driver from Pudupet, were held for carrying out a daring robbery of the former’s ex-lover’s mother, after he refused to marry her.
Police said, Govindammal (49), along with her husband Jayapal and son Sakthivel, reside at Marundheeswarar Nagar in Thiruvanmiyur.
Sakthivel who is a car driver, had lodged a complaint with the police a couple of months ago, that his car was stolen.
Sources said, on 10 November, around 7.15 pm, when Govindammal was at the house, two well-dressed youth came in. They introduced themselves as employees of an insurance company.
They mentioned the names of Sakthivel and Jayapal, and spoke about the stolen car. The men alleged that they had come in connection with the insurance claim, and wanted to check documents. When they gained entry into the house, they brandished knives and tied her hands and legs.
Subsequently stealing Rs four lakh set aside for Sakthivel’s marriage, the two fled the spot.
Following a police complaint, the police recovered CCTV footage and identified one person as Arunagiri of Pudupet.
On interrogation, he confessed that he, with two of his friends – Kamal and Satish, had robbed the woman, at the behest of Saranya.
“She was a friend and ex-lover of Sakthivel. She was angry as he was planning to marry his relative in January after ending their relationship on his mother’s advice. Hence, she decided to take revenge,” said a police source.
A senior official said, “The police found that in ten minutes of the crime, Saranya’s phone was active in the area.
Instructing residents to stay safe, the official said, “Identity cards of strangers must be checked before allowing them inside. If alone, it is advised not to let them in. You can always tell them to come later.”
