Roads in the neighbourhood are least capable when it comes to handling even brief spells of rain. With heavy vehicles plying on them round-the-clock, their state is pathetic, to say the least.
Stretches at Moovarasampet which lead to the Thirusulam rock quarry are perfect examples of bad roads, with deep craters and crusher powder filling the air, which greets people when they travel along Moovarsampet Main Road.
Speaking to News Today, K Sanjay, a resident of Moovarasampet Main Road, said, “Countless petitions to prevent lorries from entering the neighbourhood have went unaswered. The operators of the quarries not only overload trucks with their produce but also, in-turn, damage all the roads. If minor breakages are arrested on time, this isn’t an issue. But, when the roads get beatings round-the-clock, they even lose their identity as roads. This the condition here.”
When this reporter and photographer planned a trip to the quarry, they had to return midway due to the roads becoming not fit for driving, revealing the proximity of the damage. One can relate the condition of the roads to that of the situation at Rathnamangalam quarry behind Vandalur Zoo.
“While the Thirusulam quarry is one of the prime providers of blue metal for the city’s construction needs, the plight of the residents should also be taken into consideration while making arrangements for exporting stones and m-sand. The roads are too dusty and with winter setting in, things have gone worse. So, I urge authorities to at least re-lay the main road now, before all the problems are sorted,” Sanjay added.
