In October 2018, News Today was the first to report on the smart parking management system to come up in the neighbourhood. Today, the Chennai Corporation has earmarked 1,673 spots here where the system will be made operational.
To free up road space for parking and generate revenue the government has come up with a plan where shopkeepers will be permitted to reserve space in Chennai Corporation’s parking lots here and pay the fee for their customers.
The Chennai Corporation has earmarked 4,258 parking slots in congested areas such as Anna Nagar, Purasawalkam and T Nagar under the smart parking management system as per the plan.
The civic body is working double time to meet the 28 February deadline set by the Union Government for issuing work orders for smart projects across the country. Following this, an official from the Chennai Corporation has said that the final work on identifying all smart parking slots will be completed shortly.
The parking management system will start operation in the first week of February, Sensors and cameras installed The Corporation has already installed smart cameras along roads in Anna Nagar such as Second Avenue, Third Avenue, Fourth Avenue, 11th Main Road, 15th Main Road and 18th Main Road.
“We have fitted 125 cameras in Anna Nagar for the parking management system. The area will have 1,673 parking slots,” said an official.
All the vehicles in these slots will be monitored in real time for the parking management system. Similarly, work on a cycle-sharing system will begin in February, according to sourced. A total of 250 cycles have been kept them in Amma Arangam in Shenoy Nagar.

To make life easier for commuters, sensors to monitor parking spaces, automated machines to collect parking fees and penalties using mobile applications would be set up on lampposts near the parking slots. A software application will be synced to the sensors will point out vacant slots using google maps.
The system can also detect the vehicles in the no-parking zones. This information will be sent to enforcement manager to initiate the process of fine collection/towing of vehicle. Once vehicle is parked, the user can pay parking tickets using online wallets. E-kiosks will also be set up for people without smartphones so that they can directly pay and receive parking tickets.
