Chennai: In an attempt to weed out unqualified professors and lecturers appointed by favouritism at the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University, the Madras High Court on Friday has ordered all the teaching staff to explain their terms of appointment, including their qualification in an affidavit by 20 February.
A professor of the university D Sankar submitted a plea seeking the removal of unqualified persons from the service of the university in order to enable the students get proper and good legal education. He also alleged that students were not respecting teachers.
Giving an interim order, Justice S M Subramaniam said the court would scrutinise each affidavit independently and check whether the appointments were according to the norms of the University Grants Commission and if otherwise they would face the consequences.
If the teachers were unqualified and not able to take classes properly how would the students respect them, said the judge passing the order.
The judge also expressed disappointment over such issues and said the court was concerned over the welfare of the students and the institution as it would directly affect the quality of future lawyers and judges.
The court could see appointments made by favouritism, he said, adding after two years of such appointment on contractual basis, proposals would be sent to the state government silently and such persons’ service would be regularised.
Apart from this, the former vice-chancellor of the university P Vanangamudi disputed the qualification of the present vice-chancellor Tamma Suryanarayana Sastry. The judge then directed the UGC to file a report on the educational and other qualification for the post.
