Residents of Janakpuri Second Street, Velacheri Bypass Road, are having a hard time as the main sewerage line has been blocked for the past two weeks. Two of the residents wrote to News Today informing about their day-to-day struggle because of the issue.
The street comes under Ward 174, and the residents approached the CMWSSB office and the area manager with their concern.
“Initially, corporation staff visited our street, checked the sewage line and informed us that there was a major blockage in the main line connecting the pumping station (a spot between Sri Krishna sweets and Guru Nanak college signal, to be exact) and that it would be resolved in a few days. But nothing was done. Because of this, the flow of sewerage from Janakpuri first and second street, Sankaran avenue and other adjacent areas was affected,” said a resident of Janakpuri street.
Following this, they had again informed the area engineer. “This time, the deputy area engineer came to inspect the problem, reiterated the same thing and laid the blame on the contractor responsible for relaying of the Velacheri Bypass Road. He deputed a team of workers along with jet rodding machine and other cleaning equipment,” wrote another resident.
However, the residents complain that the blockage could not be cleared by the CMWSSB team with the equipment at their disposal and that they were promised that until the repair was done, sewage tankers would be deployed to remove the accumulated waste daily. “But they continue to do this on an irregular basis,” he informed.
“The drains in our area are still full and overflowing in some of the older houses and ones that are located in low-lying areas. The accumulation of sullage will lead to major choking of the lines, reduction in capacity of drain line and thus become a health hazard,” he further said.
The residents want the authorities concerned to look into the matter and take necessary measures at the earliest.
