Chennai: All 13-year old Shreya wants to do, is to take free Bharathanatyam classes. She has had this wish in mind, ever since she was young. Now, as a precursor to it, she is all set for her arangetram on 20 April at Rani Seethai Hall.

In a conversation with News Today, the resident of Netaji Nagar, speaks on the art form and more.
“I started learning dance in 2014 from my guru Archana Mahesh at Gnanamudhra Dance School in Radha Nagar. Even when I started learning, I decided to ensure that people from all kinds of backgrounds get to learn the same,” she begins.

Her grandfather, Narayanan, also chips in. “I remember what she told me about her aim. She even asked me to look for a place to construct a hall, where she can take the classes,” he smiles.

About her current style, he says, “She practices Bharathanatyam in vazhuvoor style. Before joining dance, she learnt music as well. After attending for four years, she admitted to us that she was not keen on pursuing it. It was then that she expressed her desire to learn dance. Her grandmother, who is no more now, also wished to see her learn the same.”

Stating that she trains twice a day, she says, “I practise for three hours. Dance has become a part and parcel of my life.”

Shreya has performed in many places including Natyanjali in Chidambaram, Thiruvathurai Adhina Madam in Thiruvarur, Madurai Iyal Isai Mandram and so on, it is learnt. When asked about her plans, the youngster says, “I wish to become a doctor and a guru in vazhuvoor.”

Her grandfather can be contacted at 94441 11638.
