Thiruvananthapuram: A comprehensive development plan to reconstruct Kerala after it was ravaged by the 2018 floods under the ‘Rebuild Kerala Development Programme‘ has been approved by the State cabinet.
The aim of the project is to rebuild the state to withstand and reduce the loss of life in such natural calamities in the future, and that it is an inclusive one, said a press release.
The project is said to link all the ongoing development projects with the rebuilding initiative. Under the initiative, a river basin management authority as part of water resource management would be formed. The government will also develop a centralised command centre for controlling the water in the dams and a dam safety authority would be strengthened under the project.
483 lives were lost in the 2018 floods, which is considered one of the major disasters reported globally last year, including the California wildfire and the floods in Japan. The post-disaster needs assessment (PDNA) report prepared by a UN team said the State would need Rs 31,000 crore for rebuilding.
