Chennai: In what is claimed to be the world’s first case, doctors of Saveetha Dental College and Hospital removed 526 teeth from the right lower jaw of a seven-year-old boy in the city recently.
A media report said the surgery went on for over five hours. The swelling was first noticed when the boy was three years of age.
The boy was operated by five surgeons and seven pathologists. He was discharged within three days after surgery.
As a large number of teeth have been found and removed from a single site, the report claimed that it is the world’s first case.
The elements that were extracted varied in size and enamel and root (teeth elements). It is to be noted that in 2014 in Mumbai 232 teeth were extracted from a teenage boy’s mouth.
Usual cost of the surgery would be around Rs 75,000 to Rs 1 lakh. But the operation was done free of cost under a State government scheme, said the report.
