Chennai: Leaders of the DMK-led alliance parties have said no one could bifurcate Tamilnadu, even as BJP leaders supported reports that the Centre planned to convert the western districts into a ‘Kongu Nadu Union Territory’.
Two BJP leaders – Nainar Nagendran and Karu Nagarajan – appeared to support the ‘demand’ by maintaining that it is the duty of the government to ‘respect people’s sentiments.’
BJP Legislature Party leader Nagendran sought to know from the DMK why it fears the word Kongu Nadu when names of many towns in the state end with Nadu.
“Why is the DMK scared of the term Kongu Nadu? However, one should keep in mind that states like Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh were divided on popular demand from people. If there are expectations from the people that the state should be bifurcated then it is the duty of the government to fulfil them,” he said.
“No one can divide Tamilnadu or even dream of such a thing. Don’t worry,” DMK leader Kanimozhi told journalists.
Tamilnadu Congress Committee president K S Alagiri said such reports were the BJP’s tactic to divert the people’s attention from its failures on the economic and social fronts and its mismanagement of Covid-19.
