TN fisherman injured as Lankan Navy opens fire


Chennai: A Tamilnadu fisherman was injured when Sri Lankan Navy personnel opened fire indiscriminately while they were fishing in high seas.

According to reports, a group of fishermen from Akkarapettai in Nagapatinam district, who ventured into the sea on 28 July, were fishing about five nautical miles south east of Kodiakkarai when the Lankan Navy personnel opened indiscriminate firing on them in which one of the fishermen Kalaiselvan sustained serious bullet injuries. He was admitted to the Nagapattinam govrenment hospital.

Strongly condemning the attack, PMK youth wing leader and former Union Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss demanded the arrest of the Lankan Navy personnel involved in the incident.

In a statement here, stating the attacks and firing on Tamilnadu fishermen by the Lankan Navy has been on the rise in the recent past, Dr Anbumani said seve such incidents have taken place in the last two months alone, causing losses to the tune of several lakhs of rupees to the fishermen.

Claiming that the silence on the part of the Indian and the State governments have emboldened the Lankan Navy to indulge in such attacks, Anbumani urged the Centre to summon the
Lankan High Commissioner in India and register its strong condemnation and arrest the Navy personnel involved in the attack.
