Chennai: After Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday told the Legislative Assembly that the government would amend the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, (NDPS Act), for severe punishment against those who were involved in the drug trade near schools and colleges, police have intensified vigil on shops near educational institutions.
With schools and colleges reopening on Wednesday months after they were closed due to Covid-19, police sources said special teams have been formed to curb drug menace. Strong action will also be initiated against those selling banned tobacco products, they said.
“I would like to inform you that strict action will be taken against drug traffickers and smugglers and the sale will be stopped completely. I would like to inform you that the law will be amended to take stern action against drug dealers near schools and colleges,” Stalin told the Assembly.
Stalin said that a new amendment will be introduced to make punishments for such acts stringent, adding the government will not hesitate in rewarding policemen involved in nabbing contraband smugglers.
