Melbourne, Jan 29: In a stunning display of resilience and determination, 22-year-old Jannik Sinner secured his maiden Grand Slam title on Sunday at the Australian Open. The fourth seed orchestrated a remarkable comeback, rallying from two sets down to defeat Daniil Medvedev with a scoreline of 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in a gripping final at Rod Laver Arena.
Sinner’s victory holds historical significance as he became the first Italian man to clinch a Grand Slam since Adriano Panatta in 1976. This monumental achievement marks him as just the third Italian man in history to claim such a prestigious title. The World No. 4 showcased exceptional skill and mental fortitude throughout the tournament, notably ending Novak Djokovic’s 33-match winning streak at the Australian Open in the semi-final.
Reflecting on his triumph, Sinner expressed pride and gratitude, stating, “I am very proud. It was a very tough match. He started off really well, he moved me around the court. I could not make my game plan work but somehow in the third set, I was looking for the small chances, which I used. The match changed, and I am really happy with how I corrected it. There are so many emotions right now.”
